Data Masking – Data Subsetting

Data Masking is the process to replace, truncate, scramble, or encrypt sensitive data with fictitious yet realistic looking. Data Masking limits sensitive data proliferation by anonymizing sensitive production data. Data Masking is also known as Static Data Masking.

Data Subsetting is the process of Downsizing either by discarding or extracting data. Subsetting helps to minimize storage costs by deleting Data or extracting a subset of data for sharing or archival. Data Subsetting is also known as Test Data Management.

Data Masking – Techniques

  • Substitution: Replacing Personally-Identifying details and names with other symbols and characters
  • Shuffling: Moving details around or randomizing sensitive Data like names or account numbers
  • Scrambling: Scramble the Data, substituting parts of it for other parts from the same data-set
  • Nulling Out / Truncation: Deleting or “nulling out” sensitive values within Data records
  • Encryption: Encrypting the Data to make it infeasible for unauthorized users to access it without a decryption key
