Immunization

The procedure through which a person’s immune system is strengthened against an infectious agent is Immunization.

  • Immunization is also referred as the immunogen or is known as immunisation, or immunisation.
  • This system will coordinate an immune response when it is exposed to molecules that are non-self, or unfamiliar to the body.
  • The T cells, B cells, and antibodies that B cells make are the most crucial immune system components that are strengthened by vaccination.
  • When a foreign chemical is encountered again, memory T and B cells are in charge of mounting a quick defence.
  • The body’s immune system can be strengthened through vaccinations against pathogenic microbes, aiding in the fight against or prevention of infection.

Immunization are of two types;

  • Active Immunization
  • Passive Immunization

Active Immunization

A person may become naturally immunised when they come into touch with something, such a microorganism.

  • Eventually, the immune system will produce antibodies and other antimicrobial defences.
Active Immunization
  • In many childhood infections that a person only encounters once, but then becomes immune to the immune response against this bacterium can be quite effective the next time.
  • A single dose usually produces the desired results. Measles, mumps, rubella virus, MMR, yellow fever, varicella, rotavirus, and influenza vaccinations are examples of live, attenuated vaccines (LAIV).

Passive Immunity

In a passive immunisation, immune system components that have already been synthesised are given to a person so that they won’t have to be produced by their own body.

  • Antibodies can currently be used for passive immunisation. This kind of vaccination starts to work fairly rapidly.

  • Injection-based artificial passive immunisation is typically employed as an emergency treatment for toxicity, such as tetanus.
  • The production of the antibodies in animals is known as “serum therapy,”
  • However due to immunity to animal serum itself, there is a high risk of anaphylactic shock.
