Molecule Examples
The smallest recognizable unit into which a pure material may be divided while retaining its make-up and chemical properties is a molecule, which is composed of two or more atoms. Several types of molecules include:
- H2O (Water)
- HCl (Hydrogen Chloride)
- NaCl (table salt)
- CO2 (Carbon dioxide)
- C₆H₁₂O₆(glucose, a type of sugar)
- O₃ (ozone)
- CaO (calcium oxide)
- One hydrogen atom gets joined to one chlorine atom to form the molecule HCl(g), for instance. It is referred to as a diatomic molecule and has only two atoms.
- A crystal of NaCl(s) is an ionic lattice made up of an arbitrary number of atoms, not a molecule.
- Two oxygen atoms are joined to a carbon atom to form the chemical known as carbon dioxide. It is known as a triatomic molecule since it has three atoms.
